”The terrarium Naomi created is like a little magical world. The ecosystem of the terrarium is lush and alive with tiny creatures doing their part to decompose and tidy their tiny habitat. I love it!"

OPEN TERRARIUMS
Check for water in the bottom rocks of the terrarium before you add water. About 1/2 inch is enough. Sprinkle water directly into the soil to until it is very moist, but not soaking wet. This will usually be once every 1-2 weeks, depending on the season. Don’t let open terrariums dry out completely. If you are going away for an extended time, covering the top of an open terrarium will stop it from drying out. Trim plants as needed. No direct sunlight.
ISOPODS
Offer a variety of decaying organic matter like leaf litter and rotting wood as food, maintain a temperature between 60-80°F; avoid direct sunlight and ensure proper ventilation to prevent mold growth; most importantly, monitor the moisture level of their habitat as they thrive in damp conditions.

Isopods as Pets

ARMADILLIDIUM MACULATUM
Common Name: zebra isopod or zebra pillbug
Native Range: southern France

They're low-maintenance, absolutely adorable, and very cheap to maintain. They also make a great clean-up crew for bio-active enclosures. Being an arthropod, A. maculatum has an exoskeleton which it must shed (molt) as it grows. Isopods can conglobate or roll into a ball when disturbed or to conserve moisture. Breeding females will keep fertilized eggs in an egg-pouch on the underside of her body called the marsupium. Offspring appear as tiny versions of their parents, and families are interesting to observe as they go about their daily routines.
